In Sunyani, several female politicians have praised the late Akua Donkor, leader and 2024 Presidential Candidate of the Great Freedom Party (GFP), as a courageous and inspiring figure for women in politics, regardless of political affiliation.
Madam Akua Donkor passed away on Monday, October 28, 2024, at the age of 72 at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital in Ridge.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani, the women described her passing as a “significant loss” for womanhood, especially at a time when civil society organizations are advocating for greater female representation in active politics.
“Some of us admired her from afar. She was truly an icon in our multi-party democracy, and her death is deeply saddening,” stated Ms. Leticia Gyan, a committed member of the New Patriotic Party.
“Akua Donkor was one of the most impactful figures in Ghanaian political history, inspiring countless women, particularly those aspiring to engage in active politics.”
“Her courage to pursue the presidency has been a great inspiration to me and other students on campus. We always admired her strong presence and humor,” noted a tertiary student.
A local trader, who requested anonymity, shared that she had a great admiration for Madam Akua Donkor and had even planned to vote for her due to her dedication to transforming and modernizing Ghana’s agricultural sector.
