Ashanti Regional Security Council Unveils Measures For Peaceful Elections

The Ashanti Regional Security Council has announced a set of directives aimed at ensuring a peaceful and incident-free environment before, during, and after the general elections.

In a press release dated December 5, 2024, the council outlined several security measures, including the prohibition of vigilante groups, machomen, and private security personnel from entering polling centers.

Additionally, motorcycles will not be allowed in and around polling stations, and political party T-shirts, dresses, and paraphernalia will be barred from polling centers.

The council also emphasized that only authorized personnel, including Electoral Commission staff, accredited party agents, domestic and foreign observers, and voters, will be allowed within the inner parameters of polling centers.

Furthermore, the general public is prohibited from entering polling centers with mobile phones or cameras, and voters are advised to leave the premises immediately after casting their ballots.

These measures come as Ghana faces its toughest electoral test yet, with a harsh economic environment, low trust in institutions, and deepening polarization fueling fears of a disorderly election and its aftermath.

The Ashanti Region, a stronghold of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), is expected to play a crucial role in the elections.

The region has a history of being a hotbed of political activity, and the Security Council’s measures are aimed at preventing any potential conflicts or disruptions.
