JIRAPA: NCCE Organizes Peace Walk
The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in Jirapa organized a peace walk on Thursday, November 14, 2024, aimed at promoting peaceful conduct before, during, and after the upcoming general elections.
The event commenced at the Jirapa town roundabout, where participants gathered and walked through the principal streets of the town. As they walked, they sang peace-themed songs and carried placards with messages such as, “Your tongue is like wildfire, WATCH what you say,” “Avoid the spread of FAKE news,” “Election is all about DEVELOPMENT, not violence,” and “We need each other for a better Ghana.” These messages underscored the importance of unity and non-violence during the election period.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Sulemani B. Deriguba, the Jirapa Municipal Civic Education Officer, emphasized the NCCE’s commitment to peace advocacy. He stated, “The commission is dedicated to promoting peace in Jirapa before, during, and after the 2024 general election. This peace walk is an effective platform to intensify our message.”
He further appealed to political parties and their candidates, urging them to prioritize peace, stating, “Jirapa needs peace to achieve the development they promise to bring to the people.”
In a show of solidarity, the NCCE Director, Mr. Norbert Ambaahikpiengu, participated in the walk despite being on leave. Addressing the participants, he reiterated the value of peace, declaring, “Peace is the most valuable asset we have as a people. We must protect it with all our hearts and minds.”
Mr. Suleman expressed gratitude to all participants and encouraged them to become peace ambassadors during the election period.
As Ghana approaches the December 7, 2024, elections, institutions like the NCCE and other stakeholders continue to emphasize the need for peaceful processes. The hope is that the elections, which will determine the next president and Members of Parliament, will be conducted without incidents of violence or unrest.
The peace walk in Jirapa serves as a timely reminder of the collective responsibility to safeguard the country’s stability and unity during this critical time.
