Shama District Farmers Receive Boost from Agricultural Support Program
Monday, April 21st, 2025, was a landmark day for farmers in the Shama District, as they benefited from the commissioning and handing over ceremony of an Agricultural Support Program. This initiative was championed by Hon. Emelia Arthur, Member of Parliament for Shama, and the Shama District Assembly.
*Community’s Felt Needs Addressed*
The event marked the presentation of vital agricultural equipment to local farmers, initiated by the community as a loan facility and later fully funded by the area MP. The Chief of the Ohiamadwen community, Nana Affo Kweku II, expressed gratitude to Hon. Emelia Arthur for her responsiveness to their needs, emphasising that this support will significantly improve farmers’ production.
Overcoming Challenges in Rice Farming
The Ohiamadwen community, predominantly composed of rice farmers, has long struggled with limited access to vital farm equipment, hindering their mechanical production capacity. Their reliance on other regions for services like combine harvesting, threshing, and tractor operations has limited their production capacity and profitability. The MCE, who graced the occasion, commended the MP for the support and assured her of continued collaboration for more intervention from the government to boost agricultural productivity for economic growth.
*Intervention by the MP*
Hon. Emelia Arthur, also the Aquaculture Minister, intervened by providing a combine harvester, mini tractor, reaper, rotavator, and thresher to alleviate the plight of farmers and enhance agric commercialisation. In her remarks, she emphasised that this project intervention falls part of the president’s agenda of harnessing the nation’s full potential in agriculture for socioeconomic growth.
She further charged the Project Management Committee to ensure the project’s sustainability and benefit all communities in the Shama District.
The MP used the occasion to launch *_The Shama Agriculture Improvement Program*_ a roadmap to empower local farmers for improved agricultural outcomes in the constituency.
*Additional Support for Farmers*
The MP donated other essential farm inputs, including:
– 10 motor sprayers
– 100 bags of fertilizer
– 700 Wallington boots
These donations benefited thousands of farmers, who were excited about her proactivity and responsiveness to call to duty.
*Conclusion*
The Agricultural Support Program in the Shama District marks a significant step towards empowering farmers and promoting sustainable agricultural development in Ghana. With continued support from stakeholders, the region is poised for economic growth, job creation, and environmental sustainability.
